How should I vacuum a carpet at home?

Vacuum both sides if you can turn the carpet. Slow passes lift more grit than one quick sweep.

Grit in the pile works like sandpaper. A weekly vacuum, and a shake outside for a small cotton carpet, keeps a lot of soil out of the fibres. Use a suction head without a spinning brush on a fringe or a loose weave, so the fringe does not get chewed. Vacuuming does not remove a set-in stain or a smell. It is the step before a wash, not a replacement for one.

How do I spot-clean a spill?

Blot. Do not rub the spill deeper into the pile, and do not flood it with water.

• Lift solids with a spoon. Press a dry cloth onto a liquid spill, then a fresh part of the cloth, until it stops transferring.
• Use a little plain water on a water-safe carpet. Skip bleach, and skip a heavy pour of detergent.
• Test any cleaner on a hidden corner first. A colour that moves on the cloth is a reason to stop.
• Dry the spot with air. A soaked carpet left folded can smell even after the mark looks lighter.

When should a carpet be washed properly?

Bring it in when vacuuming and blotting are no longer enough, or when the carpet is too big for a home machine.

That usually means ground-in dirt in the walkways, a pet accident, a smell that returns after airing, or dust after renovations. A small washable mat may be fine at home if the label allows water and it fits the drum with room to move. A wool carpet, a silk carpet, a viscose carpet, or anything with a dry-clean circle should not go in a home washer. Wall-to-wall carpet is outside what this shop does. If it cannot be rolled and moved, it is not a carpet this shop takes.

How do I measure square feet?

Length in feet times width in feet. That number is what the RM2.50 per square foot price is multiplied by.

Measure the carpet, not the room. A carpet 6 feet by 4 feet is 24 square feet, which is RM60 at RM2.50 per square foot. Round each side to the nearest half foot if the edge is uneven. If your tape is in metres, multiply metres by 3.28 to get feet, then multiply the two sides. Fringe is part of the carpet. Do not price it as a room.
