How do I take curtains down?

Unhook them at home, then bring the cloth to the shop. Nobody from the shop comes to your window.

1. Slide the hooks or rings off the tape. Leave the track on the wall.
2. Untie or remove weights if they come out easily. Close a lining zip if there is one.
3. Shake the dust outside, or vacuum heavier cloth with a soft brush, before you bag them.
4. Fold them so the care label is easy to find. Keep a pair of sheers separate from a dark heavy drape.

How do I check a curtain care label?

The label decides the method. Do not guess from the colour or how expensive the cloth looks.

• A wash tub means water is allowed. Those curtains can go on the wet-clean list.
• A circle means dry clean. A circle with a cross means do not dry clean.
• A wash tub with a cross means do not wash in water.
• If the words and the symbols disagree, follow the stricter one.

A missing label is a question for the counter, not a reason to choose the cheaper list.

How often should curtains and comforters be washed?

Wash them when they look grey, smell, or have been next to cooking and open windows for a season. There is no fixed shop rule.

Sheer panels in a bright room pick up dust faster than a lined drape. Many households do sheers a few times a year and heavier curtains once a year, or after haze season. A comforter needs a wash when the cover is not enough: after an illness, if it smells, or if the fill has gone flat with dust. Sun-rotted hems can split in a wash. Washing does not repair a tear that is already there.

Should curtains be wet cleaned or dry cleaned?

Wet cleaning uses water. Dry cleaning uses a solvent. They are different lists, and the prices are different.

Curtains and cushion covers that can take water are RM8 per kg on the wet-clean list. If the label says dry clean, curtains sit with the other dry-clean home textiles: comforter, blanket, bedsheet, pillow case, curtains and cushion cover at RM24 per kg. A comforter on the bedding list is a piece price, RM15, and that is not the same number as the dry-clean per-kilo price. Ask which list your item is on before it is tagged.
