How to keep white sneakers clean

How do you keep white sneakers clean at home?

Knock the soles together outside the door, and brush dried mud off the upper before the next rain turns it into a stain. A soft brush is enough. Hard brushes scratch the coating on a lot of modern sneakers.

If you wear the shoes in the rain, let them dry before you scrub. Wiping wet mud just spreads it. Stuff the shoe with paper so it holds its shape while it dries, and leave it in a room with some air. A closed car in the afternoon sun, and a clothes dryer, are both hard on glue and on the white finish. Air is slower and kinder.

Take the laces out when they look grey on their own. Soak them in a little mild soap and water, rinse them, and hang them straight. Wipe removable insoles and let them dry outside the shoe so the inside is not sitting damp.

A small amount of mild soap on a damp cloth handles fresh marks on canvas and on many mesh uppers. Wipe with a clean damp cloth afterwards so soap does not stay in the fabric. Less water is better than a soaking. Water left inside the shoe is hard on the glue.

Skip bleach, and skip thick whitening pastes you have not tried on a hidden spot. Bleach can yellow a white midsole and it can stain coloured details, mesh, and suede. If the shoe has a suede or nubuck panel, do not scrub it with a soapy cloth at all. Those materials want a dry brush, and sometimes they want to be left alone.

Read the tongue label before you think about a washing machine. Plenty of sneakers are not made for one, and a cycle can pull a pair out of shape.

When is a home wipe not enough?

A light mark on canvas is a home job. A pair that has gone dull all over, a yellowed midsole, ground-in dirt along the foxing, or a shoe with mixed materials is harder. Scrubbing harder is how people rough up the surface and still leave the stain.

That is the moment for a shoe clean rather than another evening with a toothbrush. The job is a clean of the pair. It is not a repair. Tears, peeling soles, and missing eyelets stay as they are.

The shop’s own note is worth reading before you drop a pair off:

Results vary by material, age, and stain. We deep-clean, but we don’t repair tears or reverse all yellowing.

A midsole that has yellowed for years may lighten and still not return to the box colour. A set-in stain may come back lighter and still show a shadow. A clean will not stitch a tear.

What should you do before you bring them in?

Knock off loose dirt so the person cleaning them can see the actual marks. Take out anything tucked in the shoe. If one shoe is much worse than the other, point at the stain when you hand them over. Mention the material if you know it: canvas, leather, mesh, suede, or a mix.

Shoes do not go in the wash-and-fold bag. Wash and fold is RM4.50 per kg for everyday clothes and towels, with a 3 kg minimum. A sneaker is not part of that kilogram. Keep the pair together, including the laces if you already removed them. A lace that stays at home cannot be cleaned with the shoe.

Brush off dry dirt, keep bleach away, and let the pair dry in the air. When the marks are past a cloth and some soap, the listed clean is RM30 or RM45, and the result still depends on the material, the age, and the stain.
