Fabric Safe treatment Avoid Soak time
Cotton, linen, polyester Blot, cold rinse from the back, then dish soap. Heat from the sun, a dryer or an iron until the stain is gone. 30 minutes in cool water with detergent. An hour first if it has dried.
Coffee with milk or creamer Start with cold water, then soap. Hot water first. It can set the milk protein. 30 minutes in cool water with detergent.
Silk, wool, satin, dry clean only Blot with a damp cloth. Scrubbing or soaking. Do not soak.

To get a coffee stain out of clothes, blot up what you can, then rinse the stain from the back of the fabric under a cold tap. Rub a few drops of dish soap or liquid detergent into the spot, leave it for five minutes, and rinse again. If a brown mark is left, soak the piece for 30 minutes in cool water with a little detergent, or use an oxygen bleach soak on whites. Wash as normal and check the spot before drying, because heat from the sun, a dryer or an iron can set a coffee stain for good.

Coffee is one of the most common marks we see on office shirts and blouses: a splash on the way to work, a drip at the mamak, a spill on the train. Fresh coffee comes out easily if you treat it the same day.

What you need

  • A clean cloth or kitchen paper
  • Cold tap water
  • A few drops of washing-up liquid, or the liquid detergent you already use
  • A basin big enough to sink the stained part
  • Optional for white shirts: oxygen bleach powder (sodium percarbonate)
  • Optional for dried black coffee: plain white vinegar

First, check the fabric

Coffee usually lands on office wear, so read the label on that shirt, blouse or pair of trousers before you start.

  • Cotton, linen and polyester take a cold rinse, soap and a long soak without trouble, which covers most work shirts.
  • Coloured clothes can lose colour if you use bleach on a coffee mark. Keep to cold water and soap, and dab any stronger mix on an inside seam first.
  • Silk, wool, satin and anything marked “dry clean only” can ring or lose their finish when wet. Only blot the coffee with a barely damp cloth, then bring the piece in.

Kopi O or coffee with milk?

Black coffee (kopi O) is mostly colour and tannin, so it comes out with water and soap. Coffee with milk or creamer (kopi, latte, 3-in-1) also leaves milk protein and a little fat. Start with cold water for those, because hot water can cook the milk into the fibres, and give the soap a little longer to break down the fat.

How to remove a coffee stain, step by step

  1. Blot, don’t rub. Press a clean cloth or kitchen paper on the stain to lift as much coffee as you can. Rubbing at this stage spreads it wider.

  2. Rinse from the back. Turn the shirt inside out and let a cold tap run onto the back of the coffee mark. That pushes the coffee back out of the fibres it soaked into, rather than deeper through the cloth.

  3. Rub in dish soap. Drip a little washing-up liquid or liquid detergent onto the mark and massage it in with your fingertips. Give it about five minutes to work on the coffee oils, then rinse cold.

  4. Soak if a mark is left. If a brown ring is still there, leave the shirt in a basin of cool water with a spoonful of detergent for about 30 minutes. On white or colourfast cotton, mix oxygen bleach as its packet says and soak in that instead, as it lifts coffee well.

  5. Wash as normal. Put it through your normal wash at the warmest temperature the label allows.

  6. Check before drying. Hold the damp shirt up to the light before you hang it out, tumble it or iron it. Any coffee shadow you can see now will be fixed by heat, so go back to the soap and soak, and let it air-dry.

Old and dried coffee stains

A dried coffee stain is harder but often still comes out. Soak the piece in cool water for an hour first to loosen it. For old black coffee stains on colourfast cotton, dab on a mix of one part white vinegar to two parts water, leave it for ten minutes, then rinse and go through the steps above. A long oxygen bleach soak is the best home option for an old mark on whites. A stain that has already been ironed or dried in the sun may leave a faint shadow.

Coffee on a carpet

You cannot rinse a carpet from the back, so blot the spill with a dry cloth straight away, then dab it with a cloth dampened in cool water and a little dish soap, and blot dry with a clean towel. Our guide on how to clean a carpet at home covers the rest.

An older coffee mark on a white shirt can turn into a yellowish patch; for that, read how to remove yellow stains from a white shirt. For other common marks, read our guides on oil stains, pen ink and curry stains.

Which coffee stains to bring to the shop

Same-day coffee on a cotton or polyester shirt usually comes out at home. A latte on a silk blouse, a spill on a wool suit jacket, or coffee on baju kurung, baju Melayu and other festive wear is worth bringing to us before you try anything, along with any piece labelled “dry clean only”. Our post on what not to machine-wash explains which pieces are safer away from water.

FAQ

Does hot water remove coffee stains?

Warm water helps with black coffee once the stain has been rinsed, but start with cold water for coffee with milk or creamer, because heat can set the milk protein. Never iron or tumble-dry a piece until the stain is gone.

Does vinegar remove coffee stains?

A mix of one part white vinegar to two parts water can help lift an old black coffee stain on colourfast cotton. Rinse it out and wash the piece afterwards.

Can I use bleach on a coffee stain?

Oxygen bleach is safe for whites and most colourfast cotton. Avoid chlorine bleach on coloured clothes, silk and wool, and never mix it with vinegar.

Can old coffee stains be removed?

Many do. Give a dried coffee mark an hour in cool water, then work through soap and, on whites, oxygen bleach. If the shirt was ironed or sun-dried with the stain on it, a light shadow may stay.
