How to get an oil stain out of clothes
Quick reference
| Fabric | Safe treatment | Avoid | Soak time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washable cotton, polyester and everyday clothes | Blot, then dish soap. Optional powder for 10 to 15 minutes on a heavy splash. | Hot water first. Dryer or iron before the mark is gone. Bleach. | A few minutes with dish soap. 30 minutes or longer if it has already been through heat. |
| Dry clean only, including many silks and wools | Blot only, then bring it in and say it is oil. | Water and soap, which can ring or shrink the cloth. | Do not soak. |
To get an oil stain out of clothes, blot up as much oil as you can, then work a little plain dish soap into the mark so it breaks up the grease. Rinse with cool water, wash on a cool cycle, and check the stain before anything goes near a dryer. Heat sets oil, so do not iron or tumble-dry until the mark is gone.
Why oil stains cling
Oil does not dissolve in water on its own. Cooking oil from a wok, santan from a curry, motorcycle grease on a jeans leg, or a splash of salad dressing all sit in the fibres until something cuts the grease. Dish soap is built for that job. The same idea shows up when you treat a curry stain, which is oil plus turmeric colour.
Act while the stain is fresh if you can. A dried oil ring is harder, but the same steps still help.
How to remove an oil stain, step by step
- Blot, do not rub. Lay the cloth flat. Press a clean paper towel or white cloth onto the spot to lift liquid oil. Rubbing spreads the grease and pushes it deeper.
- Cover with absorbent powder (optional). For a heavy fresh splash, sprinkle a little cornflour, baby powder or baking soda on the mark, leave it for about 10 to 15 minutes, then brush it off. The powder soaks up surface oil before you add soap.
- Work in dish soap. Put a few drops of plain liquid dish soap on the stain. Rub it in gently with your fingers or a soft brush, from the outside of the mark inwards. Give it a few minutes to sit.
- Rinse cool from the back. Turn the fabric inside out and run cool water through the back of the stain so oil is pushed out the way it came in.
- Repeat if needed. Stubborn grease often needs a second round of soap before it looks clear.
- Wash cool. Wash the piece alone or with similar colours on a cool setting. Check the stain in good light before you dry it.
If colour has transferred as well as oil, such as lipstick mixed with balm, the blotting and soap steps in How to get lipstick out of a white shirt are a good extra pass after the grease is cut.
What not to do
- Do not use hot water first. Heat can set the oil into the fibre.
- Do not put it in the dryer until the mark is gone. Dryer heat bakes grease in and makes a later fix much harder.
- Do not iron over the spot. Same problem as the dryer.
- Skip bleach on oil. Bleach does not cut grease, and it can damage colour and fabric.
Fabric and label checks
Read the care label before you soak anything.
- Washable cotton, polyester and most everyday clothes can take the dish-soap method above.
- “Dry clean only” pieces (many lined jackets, silk, some wool) should stop at blotting. Water and soap can leave rings or shrink the cloth. Bring the item in and say it is oil; what dry cleaning does and how to tell what not to machine-wash explain when home washing is the wrong call.
- White shirts that share a load with colours can pick up dye while you are fighting the oil. Wash them apart; see How to wash a white shirt so colours don’t run onto it.
Old, set-in oil stains
A stain that has been through a hot wash or the dryer once is tougher. Pre-treat again with dish soap, leave it for 30 minutes or longer, then wash cool and air-dry so you can check. You may need two or three rounds. If a pale shadow stays on a favourite shirt after honest home efforts, professional cleaning is the safer next step than harsher chemicals at home.
FAQ
Does dishwashing liquid really remove oil from clothes?
Yes, for most washable fabrics. Dish soap is made to break up grease. Use a small amount, work it in, rinse cool, then wash and check before drying.
Can I use baking soda on an oil stain?
Yes, as a first blot on a fresh splash. Sprinkle it on, wait, brush it off, then still use dish soap before you wash. Baking soda alone rarely finishes the job.
What about grease on jeans or work trousers?
The same steps work. Blot, dish soap, cool rinse, cool wash. Heavy motorcycle or workshop grease may need two soap treatments. If the care label says dry clean only, blot only and bring it in.
