To get a curry stain out of clothes, scrape off any solids, blot, and rinse the stain with cold water from the back of the fabric. Then work in a little dish soap to cut the oil, soak, and wash cool, and keep it out of hot water and the dryer until the stain is gone.

Why curry stains are hard

Curry is two stains in one. The oil or santan carries the colour into the fibres, and the turmeric gives that bright yellow-orange that clings on after the oil is gone. Dish soap deals with the oil. The turmeric is the part that takes patience. One splash from a plate of nasi lemak or roti canai with curry at the mamak is enough to show it.

How to remove a curry stain, step by step

  1. Act fast. A fresh stain comes out far more easily than a dried one.
  2. Scrape and blot. Lift off solids with a spoon, then blot with a paper towel. Do not rub, which pushes the curry deeper and spreads it.
  3. Rinse cold from the back. Turn the fabric inside out and run cold water through the back of the stain, so it is pushed out the way it came in.
  4. Work in dish soap. Put a few drops of plain dish soap on the stain and work it in gently with your fingers.
  5. Use a soft brush. An old soft toothbrush or a soft laundry brush helps lift the colour. Brush lightly, from the outside of the stain inwards.
  6. Soak. Leave the piece in cool water with a little detergent for about 30 minutes, or longer for a stubborn mark, then rinse and check.
  7. Wash cool. Wash as normal at a cool setting, then check the stain before you dry anything.

Let the sun help on white cotton

Turmeric fades in sunlight. If a faint yellow mark is left on a white cotton shirt after washing, hang it damp in direct sun for a few hours. It often lightens a lot. For yellowing that isn’t from food, see How to get a yellow stain out of a white shirt.

Avoid heat until the stain is gone

Hot water and the dryer can set what is left of the stain, which makes it much harder to shift later. Air-dry the piece and check it in good light. If colour remains, repeat the soap, brush and soak.

Coloured fabric and delicates

  • Coloured clothes. Skip the sun step, since strong sun can fade the dye along with the stain. Test the dish soap on an inside seam first, and wash coloured items apart from whites; How to wash a white shirt with colours explains why.
  • Silk, wool and other delicates. Blot only, rinse cold, and use a tiny amount of gentle soap with your fingertips, not a brush. Check the care label, and if it says dry clean only, leave it at the blotting stage. How to tell what not to machine-wash covers which items should stay out of the drum.

When to stop

If the stain has not changed after two or three rounds, stop. More scrubbing wears the fabric before it moves the turmeric. Be realistic with old stains: a turmeric mark that has dried in, or been through the dryer, may only lighten, not disappear.

FAQ

Does a curry stain come out of a white shirt?

A fresh one usually does with cold water, dish soap and a soak. Sunlight helps fade the yellow that is left.

Should I use hot water on a curry stain?

No. Use cold water. Heat can set the stain.

Can an old curry stain be removed?

Sometimes. Old turmeric stains often lighten with soaking and sun, but they may not come out fully.
