How to tell what not to machine-wash
Quick reference
| Fabric | Safe treatment | Avoid | Soak time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton, linen and ordinary T-shirts | A normal wash when the label shows a wash tub. | Guessing from the colour when there is no label. | Not a timed soak in this guide. |
| Wool and silk | Hand wash in cool water only if the label shows a hand. Do not wring. | A machine, even in cold water. | Do not put a structured jacket through a long soak and a spin. |
| Leather, suede and sneakers | A barely damp cloth on smooth leather you already know can take it. Hand-wash shoes. | A washer or a dryer. | Do not soak leather, suede or glued soles. |
Read the care label before you load the machine. A crossed-out wash tub, a dry-clean circle, or a hand in the tub means that item should not go through a normal home wash. Wool, silk, structured jackets, leather, suede, beaded or sequined clothes, pieces held together with glue, shoes, and anything too bulky for the drum belong in that group.
How do you read a care label?
Look at the label sewn into the seam, not the paper hang tag. The symbols usually run in this order: wash, bleach, dry, iron, then dry clean. If the words and the symbols disagree, follow the stricter instruction. If the label has been cut off, treat the item as unknown and do not test it in the machine.
What do the laundry symbols mean?
A tub means washing is allowed. A number inside the tub is the hottest water, in degrees Celsius. Bars under the tub ask for a gentler action: one bar is mild, two bars are very mild. A hand in the tub means hand wash only. A tub with a cross through it means do not wash, by machine or by hand.
A triangle is bleach. A crossed triangle means no bleach. A square with a circle is tumble drying, and a cross through it means do not tumble dry. An iron shows the heat setting by the number of dots. A crossed iron means do not iron. A circle means dry clean, sometimes with a letter for the solvent. A crossed circle means do not dry clean.
Which items should stay out of a home washing machine?
Dry-clean-only fabrics. A circle, or the words “dry clean only”, means water is the risk. Wool suiting, acetate, some rayons, and lined formal clothes can shrink, stiffen, or lose their shape in a washer. What dry cleaning does is the water-free process those labels are pointing to.
Wool and silk. Agitation felts wool and can shrink it even in cold water. Silk weakens when it is wet and can watermark. If the label shows a hand, wash it by hand in cool water and do not wring it. If the label shows a circle, leave it for dry cleaning.
Structured blazers and coats. Padding, canvas, and fused interfacing do not like a long soak and a spin. The cloth can look all right while the shape collapses. Spot-clean a small mark. For the whole jacket, use a professional cleaner.
Leather and suede. Water stains them, stiffens them, and moves the dye. Do not put them in a washer or a dryer. Wipe smooth leather with a barely damp cloth only if you already know that finish can take it. Suede wants a dry brush, not a bath.
Beaded or sequined pieces. Beads and sequins snag, snap, and can scratch the drum. A mesh bag limits some tangling. It does not stop beads breaking or sequins tearing off. Spot-clean around the decoration. Use a gentle cold cycle and a mesh bag only when the label already allows a machine, and skip the dryer.
Items with glued parts. Appliqué, heat transfers, glued trim, and shoe soles soften when they get hot and when they flex for a long time. Spot-clean them. Keep them out of a hot wash and out of a dryer.
Sneakers and shoes. A home machine soaks the glue and knocks the shape about. One pair can mix mesh, leather, and rubber, and those do not want the same wash. Clean them by hand. How we hand-wash sneakers goes through canvas and mesh step by step. Shoe cleaning is there if you would rather not do the pair yourself.
Very bulky items. A comforter or a heavy blanket that fills the drum cannot turn. It does not rinse evenly, and the machine works too hard. If you cannot fit a hand between the item and the side of the drum, it is too big for that machine. Use a larger machine, or have it cleaned professionally. Do not force it in.
A stain is a separate decision from the cycle. Treat the mark first, then decide whether the item can be washed at all. How to get lipstick out of a white shirt is that order for one common mark.
What should you do instead?
Match the fallback to the label.
- Hand wash when the symbol is a hand, or when the fabric is washable but too delicate to tumble.
- Use a gentle cycle in a mesh bag only when the label already allows a machine, and the risk is snagging rather than water.
- Spot-clean when the item should not be soaked: leather, heavy beading, glued decoration, or a dry-clean-only piece with one small mark.
- Choose professional cleaning when the symbol is a dry-clean circle, the garment is structured, or you are unsure. Guessing with water is how tailored clothes get ruined.
Plain cotton, linen towels, and T-shirts with an ordinary tub symbol are what a normal home machine is built for. Services covers wash and fold for those loads, and dry cleaning for the clothes that should stay out of the washer.
What if the label still is not clear?
Can you machine-wash an item with no care label?
Do not guess from the colour or the price. If a fibre tag remains, cotton and linen are usually safer than wool, silk, or a blend with them. If you cannot tell what it is, spot-clean it or take it to a professional cleaner.
Does a mesh bag make any item safe for the washing machine?
No. A mesh bag limits tangling and catching. It does not stop shrinkage, felting, dye transfer, or glue failure. Use one only when the label already allows a machine wash.
What does a crossed-out wash tub mean?
It means do not wash the item. That includes a gentle cycle. The item may still be dry-cleanable, so read the circle symbol beside the tub.
Should sneakers go in on a gentle cycle?
No. A gentle cycle still soaks and spins the pair. Hand-wash canvas and mesh. Keep leather shoes and pairs with glued soles out of the water.
