How to wash a white shirt so colours don't run onto it

Wash a white shirt on its own, in cold water. Do not put it in with coloured clothes, even for a short cycle. Dye can transfer. Cold water lowers the chance. It does not make mixing safe.

Why the white shirt loses

Cotton picks up loose dye, especially from new dark clothes, deep reds, indigos and anything that has not been washed before. A single red sock is enough to tint a collar. Once that tint is there, a normal wash may lighten it and may not clear it. Do not count on a later wash to undo it.

Heat makes it harder. A hot wash, a tumble dryer or an iron can set colour that has moved onto the white shirt. If you already washed them together and you can still see a tint, rewash the white shirt alone in cold water, then air dry and look again before any heat.

This is your own load. It is separate from the question of other people’s laundry. At the shop, one machine still serves one customer, but a white shirt and a red shirt that both belong to you should still be different washes.

How to wash the white shirt

1. Close the buttons so the placket does not catch.
2. Check the label. If it says dry clean only or hand wash, follow that instead of a normal cycle.
3. Use a mild detergent and cold water.
4. Wash it with other whites only, or on its own if it is stained.
5. Air dry. Check the cloth in daylight before you use a dryer or an iron.

What not to bother with

Do not add the white shirt “just this once” because the coloured load looks small. Do not rely on a colour-catcher sheet as permission to mix a shirt you care about. Those sheets are a backup, not a reason to combine the loads. And do not bleach a shirt that has gone pink unless the label allows it and you accept that bleach can weaken cotton. Bleach is not a promise that the original white will come back.
