How to wash bedding at home

Quick reference

Fabric Safe treatment Avoid Soak time
Sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers The cycle on the care label, mild detergent, room in the drum, then dry fully. Remaking the bed while the bedding is only almost dry. Ironing a mark you still hope will wash out. Not a timed stain soak. Use an extra rinse if the load was sweaty.
Down, feather, wool, or dry clean only Follow that label. A home wash the label does not allow. Not covered in this guide.
A bed with white sheets, a duvet and pillows in a bright room, the bedding to wash at home when the label allows.

Wash sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers at home on the cycle the care label allows, with space left in the drum, and dry them fully before they go back on the bed. A comforter or a heavy quilt is the same job only if it actually fits. If you have to force it in, the machine is too small.

What to wash, and how often

Sheets and pillowcases pick up sweat and skin oil every night. For most beds, washing them about once a week is a sound habit. Do it sooner if someone has been ill, if pets sleep there, or if the bed smells.

Duvet covers and quilt covers can follow the sheets. The comforter or duvet inside needs washing far less often, commonly every few months, or when it smells or feels grimy. A cover does most of the everyday work. If the rainy season makes a thick comforter smell musty, air it as well as washing it. There is a longer note on that in Keeping your comforter fresh through the rainy season.

Check each label. Some fills, including down, feather and wool, have their own rules, and a few say dry clean only.

The wash

Shake each piece outside first. Fasten duvet-cover buttons or zips so the cover does not balloon and unbalance the drum.

Wash whites on their own. A single dark pillowcase can tint a white sheet. How to wash a white shirt so colours don’t run onto it is the same rule.

Use a mild detergent, and do not fill the cap out of habit. Soap that stays in bedding feels stiff and holds on to dirt. Choose cool or warm water as the label says, and use an extra rinse if the load was sweaty. Skip a heavy dose of fabric softener. It coats the fibres.

Leave room in the drum. Bedding that is jammed in gets wet on the outside and stays dirty in the folds. That is also why a home machine sometimes cannot take a king comforter. How to tell what not to machine-wash covers other things that should stay out entirely.

Drying

This is the step that goes wrong in humid weather. A sheet can feel dry at the corner and still be damp along the hem.

  • If you use a dryer, follow the label heat and pull the pieces out before they sit in a hot lump.
  • If you line-dry, spread covers open so air reaches both sides. A fan helps on a still, wet day.
  • Squeeze the thickest seam. Cool or clammy means it is not finished.
  • Do not remake the bed with bedding that is only almost dry. That is how a cupboard smell starts.

Iron pillowcases if you want them flat. Do not iron a mark you still hope will wash out. Heat sets it.

Curtains follow a similar “does it fit, and is the label happy?” test. See How to wash curtains at home.
