How to wash sofa cushion covers at home

Removable fabric sofa cushion covers folded on a living room floor next to the bare foam cushions.

To wash sofa cushion covers at home, first check the care label and that the covers are meant to be removed, then unzip them, close the zips again, turn them inside out and wash them on a gentle cold cycle with mild detergent. Skip the dryer. Hang them in the shade until they are almost dry, then slide them back onto the cushions while they are still slightly damp so the fabric stretches into shape. Wash all the covers from one sofa together so the colour stays even.

Fabric sofas soak up sweat, food crumbs, pet hair and dust, and in our humid weather they can start to smell musty. Washing the covers two or three times a year makes a big difference to how a living room looks and smells.

Check the label and the zip

Many sofa covers have a zip, but that does not always mean they can be washed. Some zips are only there to make fitting easier at the factory. Look for a care label inside the cover or in the sofa manual. The common codes are:

  • W. Water-based cleaning; washable.
  • S. Solvent cleaning only; do not wash with water.
  • W/S. Either.
  • X. Vacuum only.

If the label says S or X, or the fabric is velvet, silk or has a special coating, do not wash it in a machine. Spot-clean or ask a professional.

What you need

  • Mild liquid detergent
  • A stain remover suitable for the fabric
  • A large mesh laundry bag for small covers
  • A vacuum with an upholstery brush
  • Hangers or a clothes rack in the shade

Prepare the covers

  1. Take photos of each cushion so you know which cover goes where. Covers often look identical but fit slightly differently.
  2. Vacuum the covers on the cushions to remove loose dust, hair and crumbs.
  3. Remove the covers and label them with a small tag or a safety pin in a corner so you can match them later.
  4. Pre-treat stains. Dab food and drink stains with a little detergent and water. For coffee and curry marks, see our coffee stain and curry stain guides.
  5. Close all zips and turn the covers inside out. This protects the zips and the outside of the fabric.

Wash them

  1. Wash a few covers per load. Do not overfill the drum; covers need space to move.
  2. Use a gentle or delicate cycle in cold water. Warm or hot water can shrink cotton and linen covers so they no longer fit.
  3. Use a small amount of mild detergent and skip fabric softener, which can leave a film on upholstery fabric.
  4. Spin on low or medium.

Dry and refit

  1. Hang them in the shade. Sunlight fades upholstery quickly. Spread them over a rack or hang over two hangers for airflow.
  2. Refit while slightly damp. Covers are easiest to stretch over the foam when they still hold a bit of moisture. Ease the corners in first, then zip.
  3. Let the cushions finish drying in a well-ventilated room with a fan before anyone sits on them.

Freshen the foam while the covers are off

While the covers are off, sprinkle baking soda over the foam, leave it for an hour and vacuum it. Stand the cushions upright near a window with airflow for a few hours. Never soak or machine wash the foam itself; it holds water for days and can grow mould inside. For signs of mould on fabric, see how to remove mould from clothes.

Spot cleaning between washes

  • Blot spills straight away with a clean cloth. Never rub.
  • Use cold water and a drop of detergent on a cloth, working from the outside of the stain inward.
  • Rinse with a cloth dampened in plain water and blot dry.
  • Dry with a fan so no watermark forms.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Washing only one cover. It may look brighter than the rest. Wash the whole set together.
  • Tumble drying. The heat shrinks covers and can damage foam backing.
  • Forgetting to close the zips. Open zips snag other fabric and can break.
  • Washing a cover marked S or X. Water can leave rings, shrink the fabric or remove the finish.

How often to wash sofa covers

Two or three times a year for most homes, more often with young children or pets. Vacuum weekly, and spot-clean spills as they happen. Carpets need similar care; our guide on cleaning a carpet at home covers that.

Dealing with pet hair and smells

Pet hair weaves itself into upholstery fabric and survives a wash if you do not remove it first. Before taking the covers off, run a damp rubber glove or a rubber window squeegee across the fabric; the hair rolls up into clumps you can pick off. Then vacuum. After washing, run the empty drum on a short rinse cycle to flush out hair left behind. For pet smells, add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse compartment instead of fabric softener. It does not leave a vinegar smell once dry, and it helps neutralise odours.

Covers with piping, buttons or quilting

Piped edges and quilted panels can pucker if they shrink unevenly, so stay with cold water and a low spin. Remove any buttons that are only clipped on, and check sewn buttons are secure. Put smaller covers in a mesh bag so they do not twist around larger ones. When refitting, line up the piping along the cushion edge first, then work the fabric over the corners.

Should you wash or spot clean?

If a cover only has one or two small marks, spot cleaning is enough and saves wear on the fabric and zips. If the whole sofa looks dull, smells stale or has many marks, wash the full set. Covers that have never been washed in years may shrink slightly the first time, so be extra gentle with the temperature and spin, and refit them while damp.

A quick checklist

  • Check the label code: W or W/S only
  • Photograph and tag each cover
  • Vacuum, pre-treat, close zips, turn inside out
  • Gentle cold wash, mild detergent, low spin
  • Hang in the shade, refit slightly damp

FAQ

Can I put sofa cushion covers in the washing machine?

Many removable covers can be washed on a gentle cold cycle, if the care label says W or W/S. Covers marked S or X should not be washed with water.

Will my sofa covers shrink in the wash?

They can, especially cotton and linen. Wash in cold water, skip the dryer and refit them while slightly damp to stretch them back into shape.

Can I wash the sofa foam?

No. Foam holds water for days and can grow mould. Vacuum it and freshen it with baking soda instead.
